Quantum Gypsies

A collection of things I have found enjoyable

This is a list of software I find useful, plus some interesting web sites.

The software list is short, reflecting my experience of having to work with the damned stuff for the past thirty years.

Google Sketchup Google is rapidly becoming the Microsoft of the twenty first century, so we will soon all have to hate it regardless. Before that happens, download Sketchup for free from the Google web site and start producing superb three dimensional drawings.
Click here to look at some of my Sketchup efforts.
Microsoft Visio I have used Visio for the past fifteen years or so and still find new uses for it. All the colour gradients, button backgrounds and tab backgrounds used on this site were created with ease in Visio 2007.
csszengarden.com A unique site where you can change the CSS being applied to the page you are on. There is a library of different designs and you can submit your own CSS for the site.
There are some beautiful examples of what you can achieve in web page design with the careful application of some simple CSS.
Old tools.co.uk If, like me, you hanker after the set of tools that Chippendale used, but can't quite afford them, then this site offers some affordable and some not so affordable alternatives. The description of the tools is first rate, which is very important if you are buying off the web.
They also have an expanding stock of quality new tools. Well worth a visit.
Fine Woodworking An American site that is, unsurprisingly, linked to Fine Woodworking magazine. As well as the usual tool reviews and step by step instructions, they also produce streamed video, books and DVDs.
What makes this a standout for me is the quality of the woodworking items that they cover. If you want to be gobsmacked at the beauty of an object made in wood with simple tools then this is the place to look.
Whenever I feel despondent that one of my own woodworking projects is not going well, a couple of hours spent browsing here soon lifts my spirit.
Pomeroy Family If your surname is Pomeroy, Pomroy, Pomery, Pummery, Pumroy, de Pomerai, de Pomeroy or Pummeroy, then this is your family site. Visit and find out how to add your DNA to the ever growing database.
WWW Consortium A must for anyone interested in the future development of the web.
French Property News I am hoping to live out my final days in France, so I check this site regularly to see if my perfect retirement property is currently for sale.
Low carb megastore If you want to restrict the sugar in your diet, then here are a great range of sugar free products. The Maple syrup is superb.
Instructables 1001 ways to survive the credit crunch and have a lot of fun too. This site is just crammed with user submitted instructions from the serious guides to solar power through to the absurd lockable alarm clock (to stop you turning it off and going back to sleep).
